If you smell gas, immediately extinguish all smoking materials and any open flames. In addition, don't operate any cell phones, land line telephones, lights or appliances as sparks or flames from these sources may cause an explosion or fire. If you smell propane that you think might be leaking, you should immediately leave the area and evacuate the area or building where you suspect that gas might be leaking.
Once you've left the area, you should locate and shut off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank, once it is safe to do so. When you have exited the area and are a safe distance from the source of the propane gas smell, you should immediately report the leak from a neighbor's house or other nearby location by calling Cumberland L.P. Gas immediately. If you can't reach your propane retailer, call 911 or your local fire department immediately. More than anything, do not return to the building until your propane retailer or the local fire department has determined that it is safe to do so.
Finally, you should always have a trained and qualified service technician from your local propane retailer perform a complete propane system check and any of your propane appliances to be sure they are completely leak-free before you attempt to use any of them.
